The Arashio was completed on December 20, 1937, as the fourth ship of the Asashio-class destroyers.
While retaining performance similar to the Special Type, the Asashio-class was redesigned with an emphasis on hull strength and stability, making it the first destroyer with a standard displacement exceeding 2,000 tons.
Before the outbreak of war, the torpedoes had been upgraded to Type 93 oxygen torpedoes, and the first ships to be equipped with underwater sonar, giving this class the ability to search for enemies underwater. Compared to destroyers of the same class offered by the major powers of the time, the Arashio boasted a well-balanced gun and torpedo armament, making it the most powerful ship of its kind.
At the start of the war, the Arashio formed the 8th Destroyer Squadron with its sister ships, the Asashio, the Mitsushio, and the Ooshio.
For its heroic actions in the Battle of Bali, including sinking the destroyer Piet Hein and damaging the light cruiser Tromp and the destroyer Stuart, the ship received a letter of appreciation from Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku.
During the Guadalcanal evacuation operation (Operation Ke) in February 1943, the ship rescued the crew of the "Ooshio," which had been disabled by a torpedo attack from the American submarine "Albacore."
On March 3, 1943, the "Arashio" was sunk by an Allied air attack in the Dampir Strait while engaged in the Lae transport operation (Operation 81).
