Takanami, the sixth Yugumo-class ship, was completed at Uraga Dock on August 31, 1942.
After escorting to the Solomon Islands, she was assigned to the 31st Destroyer Division of Rear Admiral Tanaka Yorizo's 2nd Torpedo Squadron.
After escorting Kongo and Haruna as they bombarded Henderson Field, she took part in the night battle off Lunga on November 30.
During the battle, Takanami broke away from the fleet as a patrol ship, quickly spotting the enemy fleet attempting a surprise attack. She single-handedly took on the enemy attack while the main force, which was in the process of resupplying ground forces, was preparing for battle.
As a result, the fleet sank the heavy cruiser Northampton and destroyed the heavy cruisers Minneapolis, New Orleans, and Pensacola, contributing greatly to victory in the battle. However, Takanami was hit by over 50 enemy shells and suffered a tragic end to her life after only three months.
