Pit-Road 1/700 Skywave Series Japanese Navy Torpedo Boat Chidori Plastic Model W274
The Chidori-class torpedo boats were developed for the Japanese Navy, which was forced by the 1930 London Treaty to restrict the number of auxiliary vessels such as cruisers and destroyers it possessed. They were designed to be small hulls with a standard displacement of under 600 tons, yet equipped with destroyer-level heavy armament. The first boat, Chidori, was completed in November 1933 (Showa 8).
However, the heavily armamented small hulls suffered from poor stability, and in March 1934 (Showa 9), the third boat, Tomozuru, capsized in heavy weather (the Tomozuru Incident).
Following this accident, many ships of the time, including this class, underwent stability improvement work.
After the outbreak of the Pacific War, the ship participated in the Southern Front, and subsequently served as a convoy escort, but was sunk off Omaezaki in December 1944 (Showa 19) by a torpedo attack from the US Navy Balao-class submarine Tilefish.
