Aircraft Description The P-1 patrol aircraft was developed as a successor to the P-3C propeller-driven anti-submarine patrol aircraft and made its first flight in September 2007. It is the world's first operational aircraft to feature a fly-by-light control system, providing electromagnetic interference protection. It also features newly developed acoustic and radar systems that improve anti-submarine and suspicious vessel search and detection capabilities. The JMSDF began operating the aircraft in 2013 and is currently deployed at Atsugi Air Base in Kanagawa Prefecture and Kanoya Air Base in Kagoshima Prefecture. The 203rd Training Squadron at Shimousa Air Base in Chiba Prefecture also uses it to train fixed-wing aircraft pilots and flight crew.
