This class is the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's third-generation missile destroyer, and the lead ship, the Hatakaze, was built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard and commissioned on March 27, 1986.
Compared to its predecessor, the Tachikaze class, this is the first missile destroyer to be gas turbine-powered, and the missile launcher has been moved from the rear to the front to counter air threats from the front.
To protect the launchers from waves, it is the only destroyer to be equipped with a bulwark on its bow.
On October 24, 2014, it was reorganized and incorporated into the 1st Escort Division, 1st Escort Flotilla, but in March 2020 it will be replaced by its successor, the Maya, and will be reclassified as a training ship.
