In addition to the classic rich bass sounds and expressive leads, the four-voice sound source, new oscillator draw, chop function, sequencer, and intuitive workflow allow anyone from beginners to core synth fans to easily enjoy the charm of synthesizers.
The S-1 packs retro flavor and advanced functions into a pocket-sized device. The monophonic synthesizer SH-101, released in 1982, quickly became a popular synthesizer due to its distinctive sound, simple structure, and affordability, even among the complex synthesizers on the market at the time. The S-1 not only reproduces the sound of the SH-101 using Roland's proprietary Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, but also expands the number of voices and incorporates the functions required for modern synthesizers. The intuitive workflow makes it easy for beginners and core synth fans to enjoy the charm of synthesizers.
The S-1 allows for advanced sound design and performance with 18 sound-creating knobs and 26 multi-function pads. Create tones with oscillators, envelopes, filters, and LFO sections. It's easy to dive into deeper sound design tools and work on details. Adjust effects with dedicated knobs. The multi-function pads give you access to over two octaves of keyboard playing, a step sequencer interface, and a wealth of features to bring your fresh ideas to life.
The S-1 takes the classic SH sound to a new dimension. Choose from mono, poly, unison, and chord oscillator modes. You can also customize your waveforms with the step pads using the powerful OSC DRAW function. The possibilities are endless, including splitting the waveform into sections using the OSC CHOP function to create powerful metallic sounds. You can also use the noise oscillator as a riser, and add sweep and pulse sound effects for more dramatic effects.
The S-1 features a 64-step sequencer and 64 patterns to quickly create compelling songs. In addition to live recording on the keyboard, you can switch to step mode for detailed programming and editing. Use motion recording to animate tweaks to panel controls and set parameter values for each step. You can also create lively music with a variety of functions such as random probability settings, sub-steps, velocity, shuffle, and portamento.
The S-1 is packed with features that are useful for dynamic performances. D-Motion adds movement to the sound by moving the S-1 body. The arpeggiator adds a sense of movement without stopping the flow of the music. The step loop function realizes thrilling performances full of live feeling and improvisation. You can also easily introduce patterns to songs of different keys by transposing them.
Equipped with a wide variety of classic Roland effects. An iconic chorus derived from JUNO and JX-3P that adds rich depth. A delay that brings vast movement with manual and tempo sync settings. In addition, a studio-grade reverb and detailed parameters can be used to polish the sound.
The S-1 can be integrated with other devices in various ways. You can link it with other AIRA Compacts such as the T-8 Beat Machine, J-6 Chord Synthesizer, and E-4 Voice Tweaker to create a portable and creative system, or connect it to your computer's DAWS or mobile music apps via USB-C. You can also use it as a sound module with MIDI I/O.
