It provides a low-cost solution for connecting high-speed local area networks with data transmission rates up to 1000Mbps over a set of four twisted-pair copper wires with a distance of 100 meters. It is 100 times faster than 100/100BASE-T systems and is 100% backward compatible, so it can easily be plugged into almost any existing CAT-5 cabling network.
